A 16-bit action RPG in Ardemia

Shrine's Legacy is a SNES-era inspired 16-bit action RPG set in the magical world of Ardemia. You follow two young heroes, Rio and Reima, who take up the Sword of the Shrine after a dark shadow falls over the land. Before the sword can do its work, it has to be restored by finding its eight elemental gems of magic, and along the way you help dozens of denizens of Ardemia. Combat happens in real time from a top-down view, backed by an equipment and stats system, so you are constantly picking up gear, raising your numbers, and unlocking stronger spells. Dungeons are full of monsters and bosses guarding treasure, and the overworld hides crafting materials, magical jewels, Zuell, and other secrets in its nooks and crannies. Some of that treasure feeds directly into stat increases and new spells, so exploring off the main path pays off.

Playing together on the couch

The game supports single player and local co-op only. In co-op, both heroes are played by people sitting together, with one companion always present either controlled by the game or by a friend. That means you never have to run the story alone: split the work, cover each other in real-time fights, and bring both characters into the tougher encounters. Remote Play Together is listed as a Steam feature, so a friend can join through that as well. There is no online multiplayer beyond that, so plan for a shared screen setup.

What to know before starting

Expect puzzles that ask you to use the elemental magics in the right combination, so collecting gems is not just a checklist — it opens up how you approach rooms. The story is character-driven and asks hard questions: there is no victory without sacrifice, and Rio and Reima have to decide what they are willing to lose as their bonds develop. Keep that in mind when the game puts weight on your choices. If you are coming in for the JRPG and swordplay side of things, the loop is straightforward: explore, fight in real time, gear up, solve elemental puzzles, and push deeper into dungeons until the Sword of Shrine is whole.
