What Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is
This is a remaster of the 1990s cult classic first-person shooter Rise of the Triad, put together by Nightdive Studios, Apogee Software and New Blood Interactive. It runs at 4K and Ultrawide resolutions with unlimited frame rates, and it includes full controller support, keyboard and mouse rebinding, and an FOV slider. You get all the original episodes and expansion packs, plus Return of the Triad, a new episode made by New Blood, Night Dive and Apogee, and characters and content restored from lost betas. The game leans into comedy and alternate history, with restored content, new cutscenes, a level editor, and Ludicrous gibs and lighting. You can pick between the 1994 and 2013 soundtracks, or use the jukebox, and swap between new HUDs and alternate weapon sound effects.
Playing together
Multiplayer runs online and over LAN in Comm-Bat mode, which supports multiple game modes. This is arena shooting against other players, so a group can jump into matches and fight it out. The Steam features list includes online PvP, and the tags cover arena shooter and PvP, so the group play centers on competing against each other rather than co-op.
Before you start
The game is tagged as singleplayer and PvE as well, so there is solo content alongside the multiplayer. It is a 2.5D boomer shooter with retro, old-school design, so expect the feel of an early-'90s FPS rather than a modern one. The level editor is included and the game is listed as moddable, which matters if anyone in the group wants to build or load custom levels. The tags also note collectathon elements and a female protagonist.
