A cursed nightmare to shoot through

Nightmare Reaper is a first-person shooter built in the style of the 90s boomer shooters, mixed with loot drops and rogue-lite progression. You play as a female protagonist fighting through a dark, violent, surreal nightmare. Levels are open-ended and packed with enemies, secrets, random events, and plenty of blood and treasure. The game uses a mix of manual and random level generation, so runs keep some variety while still having hand-built structure. A mysterious story runs underneath the action without getting in the way, and the soundtrack and audio come from Andrew Hulshult.

Playing with your group

You can take on the nightmare solo or join up online with as many as three friends, for a squad of up to four. The full campaign is playable in online co-op, so your group can push through the levels together rather than splitting into separate runs. Everyone brings their own arsenal into the fight, and the sheer volume of enemies means there is always something to shoot. Online PvP is also available for when the group wants to fight each other instead of the nightmares.

Weapons, loot, and upgrades

The game ships with 80 unique weapons that drop as loot, and each one can roll with a mix of over 30 enchantment types, so the same gun can behave very differently depending on what it carries. Gold found during runs feeds into character progression: spend it on upgrades and new abilities through minigames. Between the loot drops, enchantments, and upgrade path, building out your character is a big part of the loop alongside the shooting.

Before you start

Expect a dark and violent experience tagged with horror, gore, and psychological horror elements. The game carries tags for retro, pixel graphics, and old-school shooters, so the presentation leans into a 90s look rather than modern fidelity. It supports singleplayer, online co-op, and online PvP, and includes many game modes on top of the campaign.
