What Quake III Arena Is
Quake III Arena is a fast, skill-based arena shooter from id Software. The greatest warriors of all time and space have been summoned to fight for the amusement of an ancient alien race. You pick up weapons and power-ups on the map and fight other players across high-tech and gothic arenas. The game includes the main game and the Quake III: Team Arena expansion pack.
Playing Together
You can compete in multiplayer action for up to 16 players. The available modes are Free for All (FFA), Team Deathmatch (TDM), Tournament (1v1), and Capture the Flag (CTF). Team Arena adds One-Flag CTF, Overload, and Harvester, plus a single-player "Tournament" mode. If you want to play offline, single-player mode uses AI-controlled bots.
Before You Start
There are thirty-five unique arenas in the base game and twenty more in Team Arena, so expect a lot of map variety. You have twelve weapons in the base game, plus Chaingun, Nailgun, and Proximity Launcher in Team Arena. Team Arena also lets you pick one of five clans: The Fallen, Pagans, Crusaders, Intruders, and Stroggs, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Four new AI bots join the roster: Pi, Fritzkrieg, Janet, and James. Two new power-ups, Kamikaze and Invulnerability Shield, and four CTF-only Runes (Scout, Doubler, Guard, and Ammo-Regen) add more to manage during a match. The game is tagged as difficult and competitive, so expect a steep learning curve.
