A sandbox RPG across shattered islands
Portal Knights is a cooperative 3D sandbox action RPG set in Elysia, a world broken apart by the Fracture and ruled by the Hollow King. You pick one of three classes — Warrior, Mage or Ranger — then customize your appearance, abilities and gear. As you level up you unlock new talents. Combat happens in real time, and each foe has its own strengths and weaknesses to weigh when you choose between weapons, spells and special abilities. Between fights you collect resources in caves, lakes and dungeons, then use them for crafting. Portals let you travel between dozens of randomly generated 3D worlds, so the route through the realm changes each time.
Playing together
You can team up in 4-person cooperative multiplayer or use 2-player split screen. Groups can stick together to explore dangerous dungeons and build large structures, or split up and work on separate projects. Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which lets friends join over a connection. The game supports building as a shared activity: you and your friends can put up architecture on the same island, and Creative Mode lets you assemble structures quickly and share them with others on the Steam Workshop.
Building, quests and bosses
Private islands unlock as you progress, giving you a place to build a castle, store your belongings and show it off to friends. Building uses dozens of materials and furnishings, and you can place NPCs inside your creations. Outside of building, Elysia is populated with colorful characters who give quests; completing them can bring those characters back to your castle. Random events across the fractured world offer exclusive items when you finish their quests. The biggest fights are the Greatbeasts, boss creatures that each hide in their own lair. Expect to spend time gathering, crafting and preparing gear before taking one on.
