A revenge story across Fortune Valley

Need for Speed Payback is set in Fortune Valley, a city run by The House, a cartel that controls the casinos, the criminals and the cops. Your crew was split apart by betrayal and comes back together for revenge. You play as three characters — Tyler, Mac and Jess — who each take on different parts of the job as they work toward taking The House down. Missions range from heist setups to car battles to big scripted set pieces, and cop chases escalate in intensity as you push through the city, the mountains, the canyons and the deserts.

Building and driving your cars

Cars sit at the center of the game. You start with rough vehicles and work them up toward supercars, tuning performance and changing the looks as you go. There are five car classes — Race, Drift, Off-Road, Drag and Runner — and each one is built for a different kind of event, so you swap between cars rather than driving one machine everywhere. Off-road sections take you off the tarmac entirely, while drag and drift events reward very different driving habits. Expect to spend time in menus adjusting parts as much as you spend behind the wheel.

Playing with friends

The game supports online co-op and online PvP. Autolog recommendations let you challenge friends or rivals through events as they come up, and online leaderboards let you go head-to-head on classic rankings. Since the campaign follows three characters working together, co-op fits the shape of the story missions, while PvP is where you settle things directly against other drivers.

Risk, reward and what to know first

Risk vs Reward is a core mechanic: the harder you push, especially during intense cop chases, the more you stand to gain and the more you can lose. Chases are a constant presence, so getting comfortable with escapes matters as much as winning races. The game is an arcade-leaning action driver rather than a strict simulation, with vehicular combat mixed into the racing. Plan on owning several cars across the five classes instead of one do-everything vehicle, and expect the difficulty to come from pursuit pressure as much as from the field of rivals.
