A squad of robots cleaning up a fungal mess
Mycopunk is a first-person shooter where a crew of scrap-heap robots works for the SAXON corporation as the New Atlas Hazard Crew. Your job is planet-side extermination: drop onto a world hit by a fungal catastrophe, fight through the mycological menace, and come back with new mods. Missions are the core loop — go out, slaughter enemies, collect upgrades, return. The fungal aliens corrupt and weaponize the planet's technology against you, so the environment itself turns hostile. Loot dropped by enemies can be grabbed by other enemies before you get to it, which keeps fights scrappy rather than tidy.
Playing it as a group
Mycopunk supports 4-player online co-op, so a group of friends can run missions together as one ragtag squad. Everyone builds their own robot and loadout, then mixes mods after each mission. The upgrade system is grid-based: you slot mods into grids, and whatever fits is legal. That means one player can spec into healing support while another bolts a deflector shield onto a chainsaw, or turns themselves into a bomb. The builds are meant to be pushed to extremes, so a crew that coordinates roles — or a crew that all makes horrible mistakes of engineering — both work. Between missions everyone hangs out in an orbital dropship where you can shoot the breeze with the insectoid SAXON veteran Roachard Cox and dig into more of the galaxy.
What to know before starting
The arsenal mixes futuristic weapons with power tools, and the grid upgrade system is where the game gets deep: hundreds of hand-crafted upgrades, matched and stacked into whatever ridiculous super-weapon you can assemble. Your robots mutate alongside your weapons as mods pile up, and your choices define whether you end up a tuned death machine or a comedy of errors. The game is in Early Access, so expect it to still be taking shape. It can be played singleplayer as well as in co-op, and it supports controllers. The tone is silly — SAXON may have misfiled your taxes, or that may have been your own fault — but the combat loop is PvE against hordes of enemies across a series of dangerous missions.
