Gotham's villains on the loose

All the inmates of Arkham Asylum break out at once, and Batman and Robin are the ones who have to put them back. You build, drive, swing and fight your way across Gotham City, catching escaped villains such as The Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow and others. The tone is comic rather than grim: the Batman material is played straight while the LEGO presentation keeps things light, so the whole thing reads as a playful take on the character rather than a dark one.

Playing through both sides

The story runs in two directions. First you play as Batman and Robin, working through the city to round up the escapees. After that you jump into the same story from the villain's side, taking control of Batman's foes, wielding their abilities and battling Batman while causing chaos across the city. Since the levels are shared between both runs, playing the other side gives you a different view of places you have already been through, with different characters to use.

Playing together

The game supports local co-op with split screen, so two people on the same machine can play side by side through the campaign. Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which lets someone join over a network as if they were sitting locally. Both players pick characters and work through the same levels, which suits the way these games are built: sections are laid out for two, with plenty of building, driving and fighting to share.

Before you start

Expect a third-person action game with light puzzle solving, where you rebuild broken objects and swap between characters to use their particular abilities. Levels are full of collectibles to gather, so replays are normal rather than a sign you missed something. Character customization is available, and the content is family friendly. A controller is a comfortable fit for this kind of game, and the whole thing works as a single-player run as well as a shared one.
