A rogue-lite action-rpg with a growing town

Heroes of Hammerwatch II sends you into the Dark Citadel, a dungeon that rebuilds itself with randomly generated levels every time you enter. You fight through it with hack-and-slash combat, collect equipment and trinkets, and bring what you earn back home. Between runs you spend that progress on your town, your gear, and your character, so even a failed expedition leaves you stronger than before. The game mixes permanent equipment in the style of action-rpgs with run-defining rewards from its rogue-lite roots, which means each trip into the Citadel hands you something new to work with.

Playing with your friends

You can take on the Dark Citadel solo or with a team of up to 4 players online. Everyone brings their own class and build into the run, and the shared dungeon means you fight through the same floors together. Since the levels are randomly generated, no two sessions play out the same, so a group that runs the Citadel more than once will keep hitting new layouts, enemies, and traps.

Classes, gear, and what to know before starting

There are 7 classes to work with. Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard are available from the start, while Rogue, Warlock, and Sorcerer unlock through gameplay. Each class has 3 specializations that bring new abilities and passives, so there is room to reshape how a character plays even after you have settled on a class.

Gear matters as much as levels. Weapons and equipment can be enchanted, and blueprints you find unlock new enchants. Trinkets take attunements that permanently upgrade them, and drinks you collect can modify a run. Your town ties all of this together: upgrading it unlocks NPCs that help your expeditions, gives you a place to stash items, and opens up more ways to shape your play style.

Once you have cleared the Citadel, New Game+ keeps things going with tougher enemies, better gear, greater buffs, and unlimited leveling. Expect a game that rewards repeated runs rather than a single playthrough.
