What FUMES is

FUMES is a car combat game with a retro feel, built around driving, shooting and upgrading. You get into a car, bolt weapons onto it and head out into endless wastelands. The world is procedural, so the desert stretches on without loading screens or fast travel — you drive everywhere you want to go. Along the way you fight waves of enemies, take on giant bosses on wheels, run off-road races against the fastest drivers of the wastes, and deliver suspicious packages while chasers hunt you down. Between fights you can just cruise, listen to the guitar-heavy original soundtrack and explore.

Playing it with friends

FUMES works as a single-player game, and friends can be invited into your single-player world for online co-op. How many join depends on what your hardware can handle. Anything you earn together — loot and progress — is saved to your single-player save as well, so nothing is lost when you go back to playing alone. The co-op is PvE: you and your friends take on the enemies, chasers and bosses of the wasteland together.

Cars, upgrades and combat style

Cars are customizable. You choose weapons and a loadout that fits how you like to fight, and you can slap stickers on for looks. New cars and parts come from beating bosses. The driving physics are inspired by old rally games, and the combat is meant to be straightforward and fast-paced rather than fussy. Expect vehicular combat, off-road driving and exploration of open, post-apocalyptic environments.

Before you start

FUMES is in Early Access, so the game is still being developed and things can change as it grows. There is a demo available that covers the beginning of the full game, and your demo save carries over to the full game — a good way to see whether the driving and shooting click with you before committing. The developers also run a Discord server where players hang out and get involved in the creation of the world.
