What Forsaken Remastered is
Forsaken Remastered is a 3D first-person shooter set on a dead Earth, where scavengers from across the galaxy have arrived to dig out the technology buried in underground tunnels. You play as one of those scavengers, riding a hoverbike through the tunnels while automated defense systems and rival scavengers try to stop you. The original Forsaken came out in 1998 for PlayStation, PC and Nintendo 64, and Nightdive Studios have restored it here. The singleplayer campaign gives you 32 levels to work through, with 5 primary weapons and 9 secondary weapons to pick up along the way.
Playing together
The multiplayer side is where a group gets involved. Online PvP supports up to 16 players, and all the modes from the PC version are included: Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, One Flag CTF, Bounty Hunt and Team Bounty Hunt. That covers both the everyone-for-themselves style and the team formats, so a group can split into sides for flag runs or bounty rounds, or just pile into a free-for-all. Movement is fully 6DOF, meaning you have a complete 360-degree range of freedom rather than being stuck to the ground, which changes how fights play out compared to a standard shooter.
Before you start
The game leans into its classic boomer-shooter roots, so expect old-school level design and combat rather than modern systems. The remaster adds widescreen and 4K support, interpolated movement for 144Hz displays and beyond, MSAA and SMAA anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, motion blur, improved particle effects, OpenGL 3.2 and DirectX 11 support, a new automap, and a remastered HUD. It also includes the unique levels and enemies from the N64 version, plus unlockable bonus levels that were not in the original release. Text is localized in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Worth knowing: the Steam tags list the game as singleplayer as well as an FPS, so the multiplayer is a separate layer on top of the campaign rather than the whole experience.
