What First Person Tennis is
First Person Tennis is a tennis simulator built for VR, made by Mikori Games. It runs on a physics engine meant to reproduce real tennis shots, so the ball reacts to how you actually swing rather than playing a canned animation. The game is still in Early Access and keeps being developed with input from a community and professional tennis players, with the aim of pushing the realism further over time.
You can pick between an Arcade mode and a Simulation mode, so you can dial the experience toward something relaxed or toward something closer to real match play. There are different difficulty levels to match how you play. On top of that, the game offers seven court surfaces: clay, grass, hard, blue-green hard, classic synthetic, indoor hard and indoor synthetic.
Playing together
Online multiplayer is the way to meet up with friends and take each other on. Beyond casual matches, there are 13 tournaments to work through, including 4 Slams and 9 Masters, and a global leaderboard to see where you stand against other players. The developers also run online tournaments through their Discord, which is where you can find friends and opponents.
Before you start
Movement around the court comes in four flavours: Teleport, Autorun, Manual Run and Run in Place. Try a couple and see which one suits your space and your stomach, since moving across a full court in VR affects people differently. Serving is done one-handed.
If you have Vive Tracker hardware, you can play with your real tennis racket instead of a controller, which changes how the swings feel. Characters are fully customizable in 3D, so you can set up how you look before a match. The game is tagged for all ages and tennis players, and it also has a Singleplayer option alongside the online side.
