A first-person science-fiction horror shooter with puzzles
[ECHOSTASIS] is the final chapter of the [ENIGMA] trilogy, following The ENIGMA Machine and MOTHERED - A Role-Playing Horror Game. You take the role of the [ADMINISTRATOR] inside ENIGMA's headquarters, which has just had a [VIRUS] uploaded to it: an [ALGORITHM] that builds personalized realities called [ECHOES]. Your work is to enter the minds of three key [SUBJECTS] who are lost in the [CLOUD] and work out what happened to them. The play mixes exploration, puzzle solving and combat in a first-person view, with a cyberpunk, dystopian setting that leans hard into questions about artificial intelligence, capitalism and what it means to be human.
Working your way through the dreamscape
Each [SUBJECT] has a [DREAMSCAPE] you have to travel through, and time there is limited, so you need to decide where to spend it. Opening shortcuts opens up new [PATHS] and weapons, and those in turn let you push deeper into a mind. The horrors waiting inside each dreamscape have to be faced before you can bring a [SUBJECT] home. Combat sits alongside the puzzle and exploration parts rather than replacing them, so expect to switch between thinking about a space and shooting your way through it.
The keyword terminal
An interactive [TERMINAL] runs through the whole thing using an open-ended keyword system. You type in words you see written in brackets, [LIKE THIS], to store your thoughts about [WHAT HAPPENED]. That turns the story into something you actively piece together instead of something only handed to you. It also connects to the earlier games: playing through here builds a clearer picture of the events around The ENIGMA Machine and MOTHERED - A Role-Playing Horror Game.
Before you start
The presentation is cinematic and leans on psychological horror, psychedelia and FMV, with a story that stays ambiguous right up to the [END]. It is built as a single-player experience; the one shared option listed is Remote Play Together, which lets others join your session over the internet. Going in blind works, but the trilogy connection rewards anyone who has already been through the earlier two games.
