A turn-based dungeon puzzler

DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder is a top-down 2-D puzzle game where every room is a hand-crafted logic problem. You play as Gunthro Budkin, a third-generation smitemaster, clearing rooms of monsters with a Really Big Sword. Nothing moves unless you take a turn, so each room plays out like a chess puzzle: you plan your steps, swing your sword, and try to survive while wiping out everything in the room. The interface is simple and only a handful of commands to learn, but the depth comes from how puzzle elements and monster behaviors combine. Monster types each have their own AI with deterministic movement patterns, so once you learn how a rock golem, giant serpent, wraithwing, or evil eye moves, you can plan around it. Terrain types and puzzle elements help and hinder you, and the solution to each room is always a logical one. The game starts easy with a smooth learning curve and ramps up steadily, with over 300 puzzle rooms across 25 levels organized around different combinations of puzzle elements. Dozens of secret areas and optional challenge levels are hidden for players who go looking.

Playing together with friends

The Steam feature Remote Play Together lets you share this game with friends. One person owns the game and invites others to join in over a stream, so your group can watch, suggest moves, and talk through the puzzles together. Since DROD is a singleplayer puzzle game at heart, a group session works best as a shared brain: everyone reads the room, argues over the right sequence of swings and steps, and sees who spots the solution first. The deterministic movement of every monster makes this easy to follow along, since the same plan always plays out the same way. The voiced dialogue delivered inline with the puzzle solving also gives the group something to react to as the story of Gunthro's exploits in Rasarus unfolds.

Before you start

DROD is tagged as difficult, and while Gunthro is designed as the beginner-level entry point to the DROD world, expect rooms that demand lateral thinking and patience. Every room has a logical solution, but finding it can take a while. An integrated hints system is there if you get stuck, and a hi-score competition runs through the CaravelNet service. The game includes a full-featured level and campaign editor with a custom scripting engine, plus over 25,000 user-made rooms available for download, so there is a lot of material beyond the main campaign. The story follows Beethro Budkin recounting his grandfather Gunthro's tale to his nephews, starting when Gunthro is recruited by Rasarus after the Rasarun king is slain. Hours of contextual music and upgraded artwork with real-time lighting round out the presentation.
