What DragonSword : Awakening is

DragonSword : Awakening is an action RPG set on the anime-style open world of the Continent of Orbis, built with Unreal Engine 5. You play as Lute, a young boy heading toward Orbis, the first kingdom built by humankind, who gets pulled into the mercenary life alongside Johnny, a mercenary, and Castella, an Elf. A Dragon that once nearly destroyed the continent has reappeared after 60 years, and you set out to find the six Heroes of old and uncover their secrets while figuring out whether Lute and his band can become the Dragon Sword.

The world is meant to be roamed on foot: meadows, secret cellars under watchtowers, deep seas full of treasure, and hidden caves and dungeons. Outside of fighting there is Cooking with ingredients you find, and quests where you solve problems for local residents. You travel with allies and collectible companions called Familiars, and the cast includes characters like an eccentric Elf who studies archaeology and a mysterious girl who traverses dimensions.

How the combat works

Combat is built around Status Ailments and Signal Skills. Each of the 19 Heroes has its own Status Ailment abilities; you stack ailments with Active Skills and then cash them out with powerful Signal Skills. Heroes swap in and out mid-fight through Switching Signals, so combos keep chaining and you can assemble your own team from different combinations. Expect a fast, combo-driven, PvE hack-and-slash style rather than a slow turn-based setup.

Playing it with friends

The game lists Online Co-op, so you can team up over the internet instead of going through Orbis alone. Since the whole design leans on swapping between Heroes and stacking ailments into combos, playing with others fits naturally: your group can spread different Heroes and their ailment toolkits across the party and chain Signal Skills together. Bring friends who like action RPGs and JRPGs with a story-heavy, lore-rich world to explore.

Before you start

Set aside time for exploration and side content, not just the main quest. The open world has cellars, caves, dungeons and deep-sea areas to dig through, plus cooking and resident quests that pull you off the critical path. The narrative runs through factions with conflicting interests and each Hero carries their own story, so paying attention to characters pays off. Combat rewards building a team with complementary Status Ailments rather than mashing a single character, so plan your roster as you unlock Heroes.
