What kind of game this is
DOOM Eternal is a fast-paced, first-person shooter from id Software where you play as the Slayer, fighting Hell's armies that have invaded Earth. The single-player campaign sends you across dimensions to destroy demons and stop humanity's final destruction. It leans into push-forward combat: standing still and playing defensively is a losing strategy, because health, armor and ammo come from attacking enemies directly. The action never really lets up, and the soundtrack and sound design keep pushing the pace rather than backing away from it.
Your kit and how you fight
The Slayer carries a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, a retractable wrist blade, upgraded guns with mods, and a set of abilities, making you faster, more flexible and better armed than in earlier encounters. The core loop is built around the "Unholy Trinity": glory kills heal you, the flamethrower incinerates enemies for armor, and the chainsaw refills your ammo. If you want to survive a long fight, you need to alternate between these three constantly while moving through the arena. Difficulty is adjustable, so a group can tune the experience to how comfortable the person playing wants to be.
Playing together
The main campaign is a single-player experience, so one friend is the Slayer while the rest watch, cheer and offer advice on where to go or what to do. DOOM Eternal also has Battlemode, a 2 versus 1 multiplayer mode where one player controls the Slayer against two player-controlled demons, in best-of-five rounds of first-person combat. That gives two different roles to rotate through if your group wants something more social after the campaign.
Worth knowing before you start
The Digital Deluxe Edition adds both campaign expansions, The Ancient Gods Part One and Part Two, plus the Rip and Tear Pack and a set of cosmetic collections. Those extras are for style and extra campaign content; the base game stands on its own. The game includes Steam Achievements and trading cards, Steam Cloud saves, and Remote Play on phone or tablet if someone wants to watch or join in remotely. Controller support is partial, so a mouse and keyboard setup is the safer choice for playing the fast-paced combat.
