A battle royale built as a game show

Darwin Project drops ten inmates into a treacherous arena set in the Northern Canadian Rockies, a dystopian landscape prepared for an impending Ice Age. The setup is part science experiment, part live entertainment. Your goal is straightforward: survive the cold, track the other inmates, fight with melee and ranged weapons, and be the last one alive. Between fights you gather resources, craft tools, and upgrade your gear, so a match is as much about preparation and reading the terrain as it is about aim. Combat happens in third person, and the shrinking play space keeps encounters moving instead of letting anyone settle in one spot.

Playing together as a group

This is an online PvP game where everyone in your group is one of the ten inmates, so you are competing against each other rather than teaming up. Matches are self-contained rounds: you spawn, scavenge, craft, hunt, and eliminate until one participant remains. Because tracking and resource gathering matter, a group can compare notes after a round on what worked, which routes gave the best materials, and how they handled a fight. The last-inmate-standing structure means every round has a clear winner to argue over.

The Show Director and spectators

What sets Darwin Project apart is the Show Director, the host who controls the arena with nuclear bombs, zone closures, gravity storms, and the power of their voice. The Director sits between the players and the audience, steering the match in ways the inmates cannot predict. Spectators are not passive: through the Spectator Experience Extension they can cast votes to choose the target of a Power the Show Director activates, place bets on which inmate or team will win, and bid for Powers normally reserved for Show Directors to unleash in a Private Match. If someone in your group would rather run the show than fight, the Director role is a different way to take part.

Before you start

Know that Darwin Project is a survival game with crafting and tracking, not a pure shooter. You will spend time gathering and upgrading before you find a fight, and the cold is a constant pressure alongside other players. The Show Director can reshape a match at any moment, so a strong position can be undone by a zone closure or a well-timed Power. Spectator tools only matter if someone is watching or running a Private Match, so a group playing together should decide up front who fights and who might direct.
