A hack 'n' slash inside a fake MMO
Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online is a third-person action RPG where the four Goddesses dive into a fantasy online game that was built in their own image. You pick one of 12 characters, each with a distinct playstyle, and cut through dungeons in realtime brawls rather than taking turns. Skills map onto the face buttons so you can stack several per button and swap between them mid-fight, and filling your meter lets you unleash an Awakening Skill for a big burst of damage. Between fights there is a large pile of cosmetic gear to dig through for the look you want.
Playing it as a group
The core setup is a four-person party, so a group of friends slots straight in. You run dungeons together, clear out the fodder, and each person controls a different character. The game lets you change which party member you control whenever you want, so someone can swap to a different Goddess mid-run if the fight calls for it. Going online with up to three other people adds extra loot and tougher enemies, and the in-game chat is there to keep the session feeling like an MMO, even though it is not one. There is also Online PvP on the table for when the group wants to fight each other instead of the dungeon.
Before you start
Expect a comedy-leaning story with a self-aware premise: the Goddesses are running around a game world that parodies them. The tone is mostly bright and silly, though the Psychological Horror tag means some content leans darker than the rest. Combat is realtime and button-driven, so comfort with a third-person hack 'n' slash matters more than tactical planning. Character choice matters too, since each of the 12 has a different playstyle, and the accessory system is deep enough that you can resize, rotate, and place pieces anywhere on your character.
