A run and gun game built around bosses
Cuphead is a run and gun action game where the big fights are the point. You move through strange worlds, pick up new weapons, learn super moves, and hunt for hidden secrets while trying to pay back what you owe the devil. The whole thing is drawn and recorded like a cartoon from the 1930s: hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. That look is not a filter over the top of the game, it is how the game is made, so expect tightly choreographed fights where reading the animation is part of reading the attack.
Playing it with friends
You can take either Cuphead or Mugman and play through the game in local co-op on the same screen. Two players side by side makes the boss encounters a shared problem: you are both dodging the same patterns, and going down leaves it to whoever is still standing. The Steam features also include Remote Play Together, which lets friends join in from their own devices without everyone owning the game, plus Remote Play on phone, tablet, and TV if you would rather play from the couch or on the go. There is a single-player route too, so nobody is left out if only one person wants to run it.
Before you start
This is a boss-heavy game, and boss-heavy means repetition. You will replay encounters until the patterns click, so go in expecting to learn fights rather than roll through them. Controller support is full, which is the easier way to play a game that rewards precise movement and timing. Cloud saves, achievements, and trading cards are there if you care about carrying progress between machines and keeping track of what you have beaten. Family Sharing means the game can be shared across accounts in the same family. Difficulty is not a menu option here — you get the fight as designed, and beating it is the reward.
