A revived 1995 sci-fi shooter

Classic Marathon 2 is the Bungie FPS Marathon 2: Durandal, brought back for modern hardware by the Aleph One Developers fan community. You play a fighter pulled off the colony ship Marathon by the rogue AI Durandal, who sends you to a distant part of the galaxy. Inside the ruins of an ancient civilization you hunt for the remnants of a lost clan and their buried secrets, fighting ancient and terrible opponents with sophisticated weapons and devious strategies while trying to escape the alien nightmare. It runs on the Aleph One engine, licensed under the GNU General Public License Version 3, and uses the original data files for authentic gameplay. Optional settings include widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering and perspective, positional audio, and interpolation above 60 fps if the original feel is too raw.

Playing with your group

The Steam features list Online Co-op and Online PvP, so your group can team up against the PvE opposition or face each other in competitive matches. The singleplayer campaign is linear, which makes it straightforward to move through together or take turns on. The combat is first-person and fast, in the boomer shooter style, so expect straightforward shooting rather than cover systems or tactical layers.

Before you start

The game is tagged as 2.5D and 3D, with a futuristic setting full of aliens, space, and sci-fi imagery. It is free to play and listed under Action and Free To Play. The original 1995 data files are used for authentic play, and the optional visual and audio settings exist in case that authenticity feels dated on current hardware.
