What the game is

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a first-person shooter with RPG systems, set in 2114 aboard the FTL ship Von Braun. You wake from cryo sleep with no memory of who you are or where you are, and find that something has gone badly wrong. Hybrid mutants and deadly robots patrol the halls, and the remaining crew can still be heard crying out through the cold hull. SHODAN, a rogue AI bent on the destruction of mankind, has taken control of the ship, and stopping her is your job. You move deck by deck through the derelict vessel, exploring its environments and uncovering the horrifying fate of the Von Braun and her crew. The remaster from Nightdive Studios keeps the story rich atmosphere intact while updating characters, weapon models and animations, and it runs at up to 144FPS with ultra-widescreen support.

Playing it with friends

The remaster includes Cross-Play Co-Op multiplayer, so your group can work through the ship together rather than each person playing alone. Before you start, you pick one of three branches of the Military: O.S.A, Marines or Navy. Each branch suits a different play style, so a group that mixes branches gets a spread of approaches to the same problems instead of everyone doing the same thing. Coordinating who covers which corridor matters when robots and mutants are closing in from more than one direction.

Before you start

Expect a slower, more deliberate pace than a straight shooter: you are exploring a large ship deck by deck, and progress depends on reading the space and the story as much as on aim. The tone is dark and atmospheric, with horror elements throughout, so it is a good fit for a group that wants tension rather than a light session. Mod Support is included alongside the base content, and there are 50 Achievements to work through if your group likes having long-term goals. Controller support is optimized, and quality of life improvements have been added over the original release.
