A Coloring Book World Without Color

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a top-down adventure set in the Picnic Province, a land drawn like a coloring book. Something terrible happened: Chicory, the superstar artist and wielder of the Brush, is missing, and all the color vanished along with her. You play as her number one fan, picking up the Brush to fill in for her. The job is big, but you explore at your own pace, paint on anything you see, and meet a world full of over 100 animal characters. Along the way you solve puzzles, manipulate the environment with paint, unlock new paint abilities to reach new places, and take on dozens of side quests like mail delivery, art classes, and photo taking. Collectible clothes, plants, and furniture let you dress up however you want.

Painting Together in Local Co-op

The game supports local co-op, so you and a friend can sit down and paint together on the same screen. One of you can work on a puzzle while the other fills in the scenery, or you can both chase the same brushstroke across the Picnic Province. Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which lets a friend join your session over the internet as if they were on the couch next to you. The Steam features list does not mention online matchmaking, so plan on playing with someone you already have handy.

What to Know Before Starting

This is tagged as a singleplayer game with local co-op, so the main experience is built around one person holding the Brush, with a second player joining in when you want company. Expect 10+ hours of gameplay plus side quests, a relaxed pace, and an original soundtrack by Lena Raine. The tone runs from cute and funny to emotional, and the store tags include Psychological Horror alongside Family Friendly, so the story can get heavier than the bright art suggests. It comes from the creators of Wandersong and Celeste.
