What Causality is

Causality is a survival horror game set inside a school filled with psychic phenomena. You move through the building in a top-down view, avoiding traps, solving puzzles in each room, and working to rescue 3 students who are trapped inside. The school itself is unstable: a Poltergeist messes with the blueprints in your head, so the layout shifts and changes around you. The game is built on the idea of tag, the game everyone played as a child, and the title refers to the causal relationship between events — what you do, and what follows from it, is in your hands.

How a group plays it together

The Steam features list Online PvP for this game, so there is a competitive online component alongside the main experience. The store text also lists Singleplayer among the tags, so you can play through the story on your own. Between those two, a group can split up: some take on the online PvP side, others work through the singleplayer campaign, then compare what they found about the school and the order of events.

What to know before starting

Expect a dark, atmospheric thriller rather than an action game. Enemies fill the school and each one has its own strategy and behavior pattern, so a large part of play is reading them, avoiding chases, or preventing them from starting in the first place. The environment is meant to be used against you as much as it works against you — shifting rooms and traps are part of the puzzle solving. The story has multiple endings, so the choices you make about the causal chain of events change where you end up. The presentation is 2D pixel graphics with a psychological horror tone, and the goal stays consistent throughout: avoid the threats, solve what each room asks of you, and get all 3 students out while uncovering the truth behind the psychic school.
