What Button Button Up! is

Button Button Up! is a 2D pixel platformer built around one rule: you can block lasers that match your own color, and lasers of any other color will burn you up. Four button colors line up with four levels, and each of the four maps brings its own mechanics and puzzles to work out. Beyond running and jumping, you get a set of skills that change how a stage can be cleared: sewing buttons in the air to hang in place, kicking other buttons to move them or dodge around them, and using your color to shut down matching lasers. Levels also hide small gifts you can collect and trade in the store for clothing you like. The whole run is led by Mr. Bunny, and the game is tagged as difficult, so expect hard sections rather than a gentle ride.

Playing it with friends

The core of the game is two-player cooperation. Two people work through three double checkpoints, each ending in a boss checkpoint, with obstacles stacked into many different patterns. The button shape change is the tool that carries a pair through tight spots: one player covers the other so they can get past hazards that would stop them alone. Communication matters here, since the solution usually needs both players thinking about the same barrier at the same time. The game also has a battle side, with weapons like missiles, mines and traps to use against each other in a fast four-player local mode. Remote Play Together is supported, so a friend can join over the internet.

Before you start

You can play solo as well: a single challenge mode lets you control both characters with a keyboard or a controller, and finishing it with a controller earns a single-player achievement. Some extremely hard levels may still need a second pair of hands. Controller support covers 1 or 4 pads plus multiple keyboards, and the game recommends playing with a pad; four players is the maximum. Expect boss fights, hidden levels, Steam achievements and cloud storage, with card support planned later.
