Two ways to play, one long journey
Blaster Master Zero is an 8-bit style 2D action-adventure built on Sunsoft's 1988 title, with new areas, bosses, sub-weapons, a more robust scenario, and refined exploration. The structure flips between two modes. On the sideview maps you drive the battle tank SOPHIA III, rolling and jumping through the terrain while hunting for the entrance to a dungeon. Once you find it, you leave the tank behind and go in on foot as the hero Jason, where the view switches to top-down and you fight the mutants dwelling inside.
Clearing an area
Each area hides a dungeon with a boss at the end. Getting there means beating mid-bosses and area bosses, which hand back new items, sub-weapons, upgrades for SOPHIA III, upgrades for Jason's equipment, and new abilities and maneuvers. Those rewards are the key to progress: new tank abilities open up parts of the sideview maps you could not reach before, so areas you have already driven through keep paying off as you return with more hardware. Expect to loop back through familiar ground once SOPHIA III has the tools to get further.
Playing with a friend
The co-op multiplayer mode lets Player 2 support Player 1 as you traverse through the game. Remote Play Together is available, so a friend can join in from the Steam side without owning a copy. The game is tagged as singleplayer at its core, so the second player is there to help rather than to run a separate character through the world.
Before you start
This is a retro-styled game with pixel graphics and an NES-era feel, so expect old-school difficulty and a lot of backtracking as upgrades unlock new routes. The tag list includes Metroidvania, which matches the loop of gaining abilities and revisiting earlier areas. The soundtrack leans into that 8-bit presentation as well.
