What Backmooms is

Backmooms is a first-person adventure game built around the internet meme "Backrooms." You are out shopping and suddenly end up somewhere else entirely: the same yellow rooms, over and over, in a space that feels oddly familiar. A mysterious monster is chasing you, and the goal is to find a way out. The game runs about 15 to 60 minutes, so it works as a short session rather than a long campaign.

It plays as a walking simulator. You move through the rooms, and events trigger as you explore. Progress comes from examining objects you find rather than from combat systems or menus. There is no text anywhere in the game, so everything is read through what you see and what happens around you. The store notes mention that "she" sleeps as part of her job, and that there is a monster here who wants to become a "mother."

Playing it together

Backmooms supports Remote Play Together, which lets friends join in from the Steam version without everyone owning a copy. One person hosts, and the rest come along for the ride. Because the game is short and has no text to read out loud, it is easy to hand the controller around or simply watch along while someone else walks through the yellow rooms.

The shared experience is mostly about tension and reactions. One person explores, everyone sees the same strange spaces and the same events firing off, and the group reacts to what shows up. It suits a Discord call where people want something to talk about for an hour or less.

Before you start

Expect a short, quiet, atmospheric game rather than a long one. The playtime estimate is 15 to 60 minutes, and the pacing leans on exploration and objects you examine, not on action-heavy sequences. There is no in-game text, so nobody needs to worry about reading or language.

The tone mixes cute and odd with psychological and horror elements, so it can feel unsettling even though it is brief. Streaming is explicitly allowed for both individuals and organizations without needing prior permission, which matters if someone in the group wants to broadcast the session.
