What Arma: Cold War Assault Remastered is
This is the 2001 military sim Operation Flashpoint, rebuilt as a native 64-bit build for Windows and Linux with a modernized version of its original Poseidon engine. It still plays like the original, but now it supports ultrawide and high-refresh displays, borderless/windowed/fullscreen modes, selectable refresh rate and V-Sync, an OpenGL 3.3 renderer with scalable TrueType fonts, full controller support with deadzone and response tuning, and fully rebindable keyboard, mouse and controller bindings. Audio runs on an OpenAL backend with integrated voice chat (VON).
The setting is the Cold War battlefield of Everon and Nogova, with vast 100km² battlezones, over 40 authentic vehicles and aircraft, and a squad of fully equipped troops you can command. The campaign follows Victor Troska, who returned to Nogova believing the war was behind him, until military forces land near the island. The Resistance campaign is a story-driven 20-mission run on Nogova with new vehicles, weapons, equipment and detailed urban environments.
Playing it with your group
Multiplayer runs over a modern master server with an in-game server browser, replacing the retired GameSpy service, and the Steam features list Online Co-op and Online PvP. LAN play is also supported. Voice chat is built into the game through VON, so a squad can coordinate without extra software. The tactical, team-based structure means one person can be on foot while others handle the more than 40 vehicles and aircraft across the large battlezones.
Modding and tools
The engine and game source code are released under the GNU GPL v3.0-or-later, while game data and assets stay under Bohemia Interactive's Arma Public License Share Alike (APL-SA). An in-game mod manager lets you browse, order and download community mods from Bohemia's catalog without touching a command line. Bundled tools cover PBO archives, models, terrain, textures, sound and config, plus a standalone scripting evaluator and a Blender import addon. A free Demo is available if you want to test the engine before committing.
Before you start
The remaster keeps the original's feel, so expect a simulation rather than a fast arcade shooter: you command a squad, manage real equipment, and fight across large open terrain. It runs on Windows and Linux and is Steam Deck / SteamOS friendly, with full gamepad support if you prefer a controller over rebindable keyboard and mouse.
