What 20XX is

20XX is a roguelike action platformer in the Mega Man tradition: you jump and shoot your way through side-scrolling stages, take on mighty bosses, and collect powerups as you go. Every run generates brand new levels, so the stages you play through are never the same twice. It's built around precise, crisp controls, so what you intend to do with your character is what actually happens — which matters when the platforming gets tight.

Runs are self-contained. Permanent death ends the playthrough and sends you back to HQ, where the Soul Chips you earned can be spent on powerful upgrades that carry over to future runs. Those chips also expand the pool of items you can find later, so a rough attempt still moves you forward. If one life per run sounds harsh, Reverent Mode gives you three lives to make it through instead.

Playing together

20XX supports 1-2 players, either sitting on the couch together or playing online. Full co-op is available across the game, and every gameplay feature works the same in single player and co-op, so nothing is locked away when you team up. You can also hand a session to friends who aren't in the room using Remote Play Together, and take each other on in online PvP.

Co-op runs keep the roguelike structure intact: the levels are still random, death still ends the run, and the Soul Chips you bank still feed your permanent upgrades. Playing together just means two people navigating the same shifting stages and bosses at once.

Before you start

Expect difficulty. The game is tagged as difficult, and permanent death means a run can end abruptly — that's the design, not a bug. The upside is that failure feeds your upgrade pool, so runs get easier over time rather than resetting your progress.

There's a lot of variety to dig into: over 100 powerups to collect, multiple play modes, optional difficulty modifiers, and seeded Daily and Weekly Challenges if you want a fixed stage layout to compare runs on. Pick your modifiers and mode before you start, since they shape the whole run.
