What 1001 Spikes is about

1001 Spikes is a 2D precision platformer set around the lost ruins of Ukampa in South America. You play as Aban Hawkins, whose father Jim Hawkins — a world-famous archaeologist — disappeared while exploring the ruins. Before he vanished, Jim handed his daughter Tina a map to the ruins along with a warning that death waits around every corner. Aban heads into the frozen tundra of the antarctic, undiscovered temple ruins and the vast caverns of South America, looking for his father and the legendary treasure said to lie behind the Golden Door of Poko-Mum. The story moves forward through in-game cutscenes, and each character has their own unique story.

How a group plays it together

The game supports 4-player local co-op and versus play, so up to four friends can share a screen and run the levels side by side. You can race each other on platforming and treasure skills, or work through the levels as a team. Remote Play Together is available, which lets people join in over a connection rather than sitting at the same machine. Expect a shared screen full of spikes, traps and quick restarts — playing together means watching each other fail and get better in the same room.

What to know before starting

The run is built around 1001 lives to get through 100+ levels, and the traps are deliberately devious: the game is designed to test your skills, reflexes and patience, so dying often is part of the loop rather than a sign you're doing something wrong. Levels are cleverly laid out with a variety of challenges instead of repeating one idea over and over.

There's more to find beyond the main path. Nearly two-dozen secret characters can be unlocked, each with vastly different gameplay and abilities, which changes how a level plays when you switch to them. The presentation is retro with style: classic 8-bit chiptunes by Rushjet1 and Misoka, with true-to-Famicom pixel graphics. If your group likes tight, unforgiving platforming with a shared screen and a soundtrack worth hearing, this is the kind of game where one player's mistake becomes everyone's problem.
