A quick arcade chop-fest

Timberman is a fast, old-school arcade game about one job: chop the tree down as fast as you can while dodging the branches. It is simple to pick up but hard to play well, and the whole thing runs in 2D with pixel graphics. There are 4 environments to work through and a roster of 32 + 5 exclusive Steam Timbermen to unlock, including the new Dark Father. When you want a break from the main run, the new Timbermill Mode puts 8 players into the mix.

Playing with your group

Timberman supports 4 Player Local, so you can pass the keyboard or controllers around the room and take turns chasing the top score. If your friends are not on the same couch, Remote Play Together lets them join in over the internet. The Steam version also lets you play multiplayer with a friend or a random opponent from the internet. Whether you are playing side by side or online, the loop stays the same: chop fast, read the branches, and try to outlast everyone else.

What to know before you start

The controls are easy to learn, but the pace is unforgiving and the game is tagged as difficult. Branches appear on both sides of the trunk, so you need to switch sides quickly and keep your rhythm. Score Attack is the core of the game, and the leaderboards are where you go to measure your runs against other players. Expect short, intense attempts rather than long sessions, and expect to fail often while you learn the timing.
