A team fighter with a long-running story
THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV STEAM EDITION keeps the series' classic 2D-style play but renders the fights in 3D visuals, a first for a mainline KOF entry. You pick three fighters and take them into a 3-on-3 TEAM BATTLE, working through the roster until one team runs out of members. The base game carries 50 characters, and 8 more arrive as DLC, bringing the total to 58. The lineup mixes returning favorites with new challengers, so there is plenty to learn even if you already know the series.
The story side matters here. KOF has run through the OROCHI, NESTS, and ASH sagas, and this entry opens a brand new story arc. STORY MODE is where you follow that arc, while VS MODE covers straightforward fights and GALLERY MODE holds extra material to look through.
Playing together
The core team format is the natural way to group up: each player builds a team of three and fights it out. Online PvP covers ranked and casual matches against people outside your group, and PARTY BATTLE lets up to six players split into two teams of three for online team fights, which is the closest thing to a tournament floor the game offers. Remote Play Together is available if someone in your group wants to join from their own setup.
What to know before starting
The combo system has two pieces worth understanding early. RUSH lets beginners put combos together by tapping Light Punch repeatedly, so new players are not stuck learning inputs before they can fight. CLIMAX Cancel is the other end of the scale: it chains a CLIMAX SUPER SPECIAL MOVE out of a SUPER SPECIAL MOVE inside one combo for big damage, which is what experienced players build their offense around.
The ULTIMATE PACK adds 8 DLC characters (Blue Mary, Najd, Heidern, Oswald, Rock Howard, Vanessa, Ryuji Yamazaki, Whip), 10 DLC costumes, a digital artbook with concept art for the DLC characters, and a 30-track digital soundtrack. Two costumes, CLASSIC KYO and NIGHTMARE GEESE, come free as DLC. Check what your copy includes before you plan a roster around specific characters.
