What kind of game this is
The Isle is a gritty open-world survival horror game where you play as a dinosaur on an island built to kill you. You get dense forests, open plains, treacherous mountains and dark swamps to cross, plus ruins that hint at what came before. There is very little hand holding: you hunt, you grow, you survive, and mistakes get punished. As a dinosaur you have natural abilities and senses — a scent ability and night vision among them — and you use all of that to stay off someone else's menu while you grow into something stronger.
Playing it with friends
You join online servers that hold up to 100+ players, and everyone else is a hungry, dangerous creature just like you. The roster runs from tiny herbivores like Dryosaurus up to giants such as T. Rex and Allosaurus. With your group you can form packs or herds, make nests, defend offspring, hunt together and claim territory. Since the game is kill or be killed, sticking with the people you trust is the main reason your group survives a session. There is also a story told strictly through the environment, and the store text says answering its mysteries takes immense cooperation across the whole community.
Two ways to play
Survival is the core mode: tense and hard, where you start small and vulnerable and progress through life stages, growing more powerful and unlocking abilities like nesting over time. Dying costs you real progress here, and not every creature is playable in Survival. Sandbox is the lighter option — a bigger roster of dinosaurs, room to jump straight in as an adult super predator or a peaceful giant, and no major penalties or consequences from dying. Pick Survival if your group wants a serious session and Sandbox if you just want to mess around.
Before you start
The Isle is in Early Access and is still changing a lot: the islands and their inhabitants are meant to evolve as players learn to flourish, and planned features include playable aquatic and aerial creatures, more dinosaurs with full life cycles, new factions, dinosaur AI with complex behaviours, and more biomes. What you play today may not match what's there later. Controller support is partial, and the game uses Valve Anti-Cheat. Expect a session where nobody holds your hand and nobody is guaranteed to come out alive.
