What Temple of Rust is

Temple of Rust is a top-down action roguelike set in a wasteland where toxic waste has poisoned the groundwater and empathy is gone. You play as one of the outcasts camped on the edge of this dystopian society, using an ancient sling and a pair of special boots to fight back. Runs start from a central hub called the camp, where you pick one of two main characters and head out. As you unlock more of the game, other characters show up at the camp and help you on your way.

Your main tools are the sling and the boots. The sling fires a wide range of ammunition — tiny fanatic dictators, research chemicals, loaded machine guns — and the boots let you pull off powerful jump attacks. Between stages you meet a traveling merchant who sells special upgrades, and combining those upgrades is how you build a distinct attack style for each run. Each level also holds a crate with random boots or ammunition, so no two runs hand you the same kit.

Playing it together

Temple of Rust supports local 2-player co-op, so two of you can fight through the wasteland side by side on the same screen. Remote Play Together is also listed as a Steam feature, which means one person can own the game and bring a friend in. The runs are built for quick sessions — roughly 30 to 60 minutes each — so a pair can sit down, get a run in, and be done without a long commitment.

Before you start

Levels are built from procedurally seeded chunks across six unique settings, so layouts shift between runs while the seeds keep things repeatable when you want them to be. Death is permanent: perma-death is part of the design, and a failed run sends you back to the camp to start fresh. There are three difficulty settings plus other accessibility options, and full input customization if the default controls do not suit you. Expect a fast, aggressive combat loop built around mixing ammunition, boots, and merchant upgrades rather than slow tactical play.
