A pixel-art shoot 'em up with roguelike runs

Steredenn: Binary Stars is a side-scrolling space shooter where you fly a ship through dense enemy fire, pick up weapons and upgrades on the fly, and take on large boss fights. Levels are practically randomly generated, so each run lays out different environments, space events, and encounters. The game mixes classic shmup shooting with roguelike progression: you build your ship during the flight with upgrades and forge your own path across the universe. Five playable ships each come with their own special ability and playstyle, and the arsenal holds 42 weapons and 30 upgrades for plenty of build variety. Sessions are quick and intense, and the difficulty is unforgiving.

Playing together

Local co-op puts two ships on screen sharing 4 weapons and a single lifebar, so you and a friend have to coordinate closely to survive. Remote Play Together is supported, which lets a friend join in even when you are not in the same room. Beyond co-op, the game includes several modes: Normal lets you pick your ship and one of two difficulties; Boss Rush throws a weekly selection of bosses at you with a leaderboard to climb; Daily Run gives everyone the same run, guns, and bosses with one attempt per day; and Arena lets you unlock a boss by beating it in the main game and then duel it one-on-one.

Before you start

Expect a hard game. Boss battles are rock-hard, runs are short and demanding, and losing means starting over with a fresh layout. The randomness means no two runs hand you the same tools, so part of the challenge is adapting to whatever weapons and upgrades show up. If you are playing co-op, remember the shared lifebar: both ships are tied to one pool of health, so reckless play hurts your partner too.
