What SOVL: Fantasy Warfare is

SOVL is a ruleset for fantasy wargames, built for playing with miniatures on a table or digitally on Steam. Fantasy armies meet on the battlefield and fight until one side is the bloody victor. Units of soldiers maneuver across the field, and the outcome of melee combat, volleys of arrows and destructive spells is decided with dice rolls. The digital version keeps that tabletop feel: a top-down view of the battlefield, turn-based combat, and procedural generation that keeps battles from playing out the same way twice.

Playing it with your group

The digital version supports online PvP through Steam multiplayer, so you can challenge your friends and fight them on the battlefield. Before a game, each player builds an army with the SOVL Army Builder: pick a Commander to lead, select units and their equipment, and design a color scheme for your force. That means you and your friends can show up with differently built armies and see which compositions actually hold up under fire. If someone wants to try a list before committing to a match, AI Battle lets you take a custom army against an AI opponent to test unit compositions and tune your strategy.

What to know before starting

The campaign mode, "Trail of Death," is a procedural campaign with roguelite elements. You start with a small warband and develop it into a grand army that can challenge the final boss, so expect a run-based structure where your force grows over time rather than a fixed scripted story. Battles are turn-based tactics, so play moves at a deliberate pace and rewards planning your maneuvers, arrow volleys and spell use ahead of time. The game is also playable as a ruleset for physical miniatures on a table, which is worth knowing if your group already has models and prefers rolling dice in person.
