What Ship of Fools is

Ship of Fools is a seafaring roguelite where you sail The Stormstrider through the Archipelago and fight sea monsters with cannons. The Great Lighthouse that once protected the region is broken, and a storm of malice and corruption is on its way. Your job across repeated runs is to push back the Aquapocalypse before it takes your home. Combat is top-down and frantic: you man the cannons, ready the sails, and blast whatever surfaces alongside the ship. Runs are built around picking a route through the sector, so you chart a course, hit encounters, and see what the sea throws at you. Between fights you can find lost treasures and remote shops on islands, and you unlock trinkets and artifacts that carry forward and change how later runs play out. There are over 100 trinkets and artifacts to collect, and the fun comes from combining their effects into combos rather than stacking raw power.

Playing it with your group

The game is built for co-op with a shipmate, and both of you are on the same vessel, so the work splits naturally: one person on the cannons, the other handling sails, repairs, and cover. Frantic encounters are designed to test teamwork, and you are expected to defend and repair the ship together, combine item effects, and watch each other's backs. Choosing a Fool matters too, since each one has special abilities that shape what you bring to a fight, so pairing two different Fools can cover each other's gaps. The Everlasting Storm shifts and changes as you move through the sector, blocking paths and forcing you to reroute, which gives the group something to argue over: play it safe and steer around, or cut into the storm to see what is inside. Solo play is fully supported if nobody is around, and online co-op and Remote Play Together are available for playing across distance. For local multiplayer, a controller is required.

Before you set sail

Expect multiple runs rather than one long campaign. Each voyage starts fresh on the sea, and the strength you build comes from unlocking trinkets, artifacts, and new Fools over time, so early runs are about learning the fights and later runs get more loaded. The route you chart matters as much as your aim: shops and treasure are worth detours, but the storm will punish a greedy path. Combat is constant and hands-on, so both players need to be doing something at all times, whether that is firing, sailing, or patching holes. The hand-drawn artwork keeps it readable even when the screen fills with creatures, but the pressure comes from juggling ship duties while colossal leviathans close in. Bring a first mate who communicates, split roles early, and be ready to adjust course mid-run when the storm moves.
