What Phobies is

Phobies is a turn-based tactics game built around collecting and upgrading creatures called Phobies, over 180 of them, each tied to some irrational fear. Battles take place on hex-based maps with hazardous tiles, so positioning matters as much as which cards you bring. You summon your Phobies, use their attacks and abilities, and lean on the terrain to hold ground or push an advantage. Between matches you unlock new fears and abilities, level up the Phobies you rely on, and refine the deck you take into the next fight. The setting is the surreal realm of the subconscious, played with a darkly comic tone rather than straight horror.

How a group plays it together

The social side runs on asynchronous PvP. You add friends, duel them, and each take your turns whenever it suits you, which means several matches can be running at the same time. That suits a group where people log in at different hours — nobody has to be online together for a game to progress. Beyond friends, there are worldwide PvP battles and an arena mode for real-time matches if your group wants something faster and more competitive. There are also solo challenge modes with puzzles and objectives, plus a practice mode for testing ideas before committing them to a real match. Weekly and seasonal rewards track along the Mount Ego leaderboards if anyone in the group wants something to climb.

Before you start

Expect a game where the same Phobies can perform differently depending on how you level them and where you place them, so early losses are usually a deck and positioning problem rather than a skill ceiling. Spend time in practice mode learning how abilities interact with the hex terrain before queueing into PvP, and use the challenge mode puzzles to get comfortable with the mechanics in isolation. The game runs across PC and mobile with cross-platform play, so your group does not need to agree on one device. It is free to play, and the collection and upgrade loop means the players who open more Phobies and level them will have more options on the board.
