Two roles, one screen

Panoptic is a local 1v1 game built around asymmetric VR. One player puts on the headset and becomes the Overseer, a giant being that watches the world from above and hunts for signs of uprising. The other player stays on the PC and controls one of the tiny Beings moving through the crowds below. The two roles play completely differently: the Overseer scans and aims, the Challenger runs, hides and blends in. Rounds are short but stay tense from start to finish.

Hiding in plain sight

The Challenger's job is to destroy the Overseer's energy orbs without giving themselves away. Crowds of other Beings provide cover, so moving with them and looking like part of the scenery is the core of the game. Break away from the crowd, get caught mid-destroy, or otherwise stand out and the Overseer will notice. The Overseer carries a slow-charging eye laser that kills a Being with a single shot, so once you've been spotted the search turns into an outright hunt. The Challenger then has to slip back into the crowd and hide in plain sight all over again.

What to know before starting

You need a VR setup for the Overseer player and a PC for the Challenger, since the game is local multiplayer with asymmetric roles. Remote Play Together is supported, which gives your group another way to play together. The setting is an unsettling, mysterious world that hints at a darker lore behind it, with several levels and environments to play through and a strong sense of scale between the giant Overseer and the tiny Beings. The game came out of a multi-award winning game jam prototype, and it's also available for arcades on SpringboardVR.
