Commanding from above
Out of Ammo is a VR tower defense and first-person shooter hybrid from RocketWerkz. You play as a commander facing wave after wave of enemy soldiers, and you work at a tabletop battlefield you can walk around. From that position you build defenses such as machine gun nests and sniper towers, call in airstrikes and gunships, and issue orders to the soldiers under you. Different kinds of soldiers each bring their own special abilities, so how you place and use them matters as much as how much firepower you have. The campaign runs through eight unique missions, and there are three FPS challenge missions on top of that.
Dropping into the fight yourself
The twist is that you are not stuck behind the table. You can directly possess any of your soldiers and play them in first person, using cover, leaning over tower railings, and handling mounted machine guns, grenades and flares. Positional tracking is central to this: you physically duck behind sandbags, lean out to aim, and grab a grenade to throw when things get desperate. Preparing magazines carefully is part of the loop, since running dry at the wrong moment is exactly what the title warns you about. Switching between planning on the map and fighting on the ground is the core rhythm of the game.
Playing with friends
Cooperative multiplayer supports up to four players, so a group can share the commander duties, split up the defense work, and take turns jumping into soldier bodies where the fighting is thickest. Coordinating who builds, who calls in air support, and who holds a position directly is where the co-op play comes alive.
Before you start
Out of Ammo was built exclusively for room-scale VR, and it requires it. You need a Valve Index, HTC Vive, or an Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers, plus enough physical space to move around your play area. If your setup can only do seated or standing-in-place VR, this one will not work as intended.
