What Mutant Football League is
Mutant Football League is arcade-style American football played 7-on-7 by mutants, monsters and ghouls. The hits are the point: bone-crunching tackles, exploding body parts and plenty of blood, with a roster of comical characters delivering tongue-in-cheek humor. It takes inspiration from NFL Blitz and the Sega Genesis classic Mutant League Football, so expect fast, over-the-top play rather than a realistic simulation. Tim Kitzrow, the commentator from NBA Jam and NFL Blitz, calls every game with adult-oriented play-by-play. The league includes 18 teams made up of Skeletal Deadheads, Armored Bruiserbots, Criminal Aliens, Mutated Humans and Monstrous Orcs, plus MFL All-Stars such as Drak Bloodclot, Despawn Rotsom and Jorgan Lust. Updated rosters and player ratings for the 2023 season are included.
Playing it with your group
You can play two player online or four player local, so your group can either clobber each other or team up against opposing miscreants. Online PvP and Remote Play Together are supported, and local co-op covers up to four players on one screen. Pick your teams, then settle it on the field where the only predictable element is broken bones.
Strategy and Dirty Tricks
Under the carnage there is real strategy. You win either by highest score or by killing and eradicating the other team, and each team has its own Dirty Tricks: Bribe the Ref to overturn a call, throw Bombs, grow a player Ginormous to pummel everyone in reach, or equip shotguns and chainsaws for maximum damage. The 18 unique fields add landmines, booby traps, fire pits, toxic moats and buzz saws, so the arena itself is part of the game plan. Post-play mayhem matters too: after the whistle you can bludgeon opponents with brass knuckles, body slams and rib-crushing kicks.
Before you start
Pick a mode that fits your session: EXHIBITION for a quick match, PRACTICE to learn the plays, PLAYOFFS, or a FULL SEASON on the road to the Mayhem Bowl. Expect gore and violence throughout, with the MFL GORE FX visual treatment front and centre, so it suits groups that are fine with that kind of humor. A controller is listed among the tags, which is worth having ready for local multiplayer.
