Building your own fighter

Megabyte Punch is a fighting and beat 'em up game where your character is made from parts you collect. You travel through different environments and beat other creatures to take what they carry. Every part brings its own power and bonus: gun arms give you a shoot ability, and powerful hips unlock a devastating pelvic thrust attack. There are 150 parts to collect and, as the store text puts it, endless combinations to customize your character. The look of your fighter follows what you bolt on, so two players rarely end up with the same build.

Playing together

Up to 4 players can play local co-op, and there is a versus mode as well. In co-op you push through the levels side by side, and in versus you fight each other in a destructible arena. Steam lists Remote Play Together, so a group can also join in over a remote session. The competitive side includes a tournament where you compete for rare parts, which gives your crew something to chase after the story run.

The world and the structure

The game takes place in a computer world where you protect the Heartcore of your village against the Valk Empire and the dreaded Khoteps. Progression runs across 6 different levels, each with 3 stages and a boss fight, so the campaign has a clear shape: work through the stages, take on the boss, move to the next electro-world. The visuals are described as chunky and stylish, and the soundtrack is a pumping electro score that carries the pace of the fights.

Before you start

Expect a mix of platforming, side-scrolling action and 2D fighting, with character customization sitting at the center of it all. Parts you rip from enemies change how your fighter plays, so swapping gear between runs is part of the loop rather than a side activity. The destructible arena and the tournament are where the build you made gets tested against other players, so it pays to think about which abilities you want before you enter.
