A squishy journey into the Great Depths
Lumote: The Mastermote Chronicles is a 3D puzzle platformer set in the Great Depths, an underwater world where bioluminescent creatures called Motes live to the rhythm of an electronica soundscape. You play as Lumote, a curious Mote who is different from the rest. When a shift turns the Great Depths red, Lumote sets out to return the world to blue by taking control of the world's inhabitants and mastering its puzzles. Along the way, Lumote communicates through non-verbal expressions rather than dialogue, so the story is carried by the world and the music.
How a group plays together
The Steam features list Remote Play Together, which lets friends join in over a stream of the game. The store text does not describe any other multiplayer or co-op modes, so the core experience is built around a single player guiding Lumote through the world.
What to know before starting
The Great Depths is one massive environment, with puzzles grouped into towers. Each tower marks your mastery of a specific Mote and unlocks a new set of puzzles as you descend deeper. After mastering all the Motes from the first world, you are put to the test in a masterclass where you take control of the Mastermote in a different world. The puzzles are interconnected and you can move from one to the next with zero loading times, and the entire world and every puzzle stay visible at all times, so you can look down to see what is left to do and look up to see the progress you have made. The score accompanies you on an electronica journey, and the Great Depths communicates through music to mark key moments and Lumote's emotional states. A photo mode lets you find an angle and share it online as Lumote poses for the camera. The tags include Difficult, so expect the puzzle complexity to increase with each Mote you meet.
