A medieval party game about ruling and surviving

King of the Castle is a multiplayer-only party game for 4+ players where one of you takes the throne as Monarch and the rest sit on the Council as Nobles. The Monarch steers the kingdom through events, and the Nobles vote on the decisions, often pushing the story toward their own plans. It plays out as interactive fiction with strategy and diplomacy layered on top: bribe, persuade or beg for the votes you need, or change the Laws of Land to make democracy work in your favour. Taxes fill the treasury with gold and salt, but push too far and Defiance rises until a Region's people revolt.

How your group plays together

Only one person needs to own the game; the other three or more join the Council. A single session can host 3 to 24 other players besides the Monarch, so a big Discord call works as well as a couch co-op night. Everyone is a central character in the story, which suits groups who enjoy scheming against each other over voice chat. Remote Play Together is supported, and the game is Twitch-integrated: a streamer plays the Monarch while chat joins with a simple command and uses chat commands and the Twitch Extension to try to knock them off the throne.

A world that remembers what you did

Five Regions — the brash Barons, ruthless Counts, wealthy Patricians, honourable Grandees and pagan Chiefs — each bring their own Events, and each has 18 Schemes aimed at overthrowing you. Balancing those competing demands is the core of the job, and if Defiance gets too high a Region can start a Rebellion that tears the kingdom apart. The game tracks your deeds and misdeeds and knits them into the narrative, so the realm builds a history from your choices. There are over 950 possible Events, 80 unique Endings and more than 17,000 choices, and after a victory or a usurpation you can continue in Dynasty Games with Events and choices shaped by your previous reign.

Before you start

You need a minimum of 4 players, and the game is multiplayer only, so line up your group or your chat before launching. You can personalise your Monarch or Noble with over 10 quadrillion combinations, including options only available as premium. Expect a stylised, colourful and minimalist 2D look rather than heavy simulation — the weight is in the choices, the voting and the shifting balance of power.
