What Kayak VR: Mirage actually is
Kayak VR: Mirage is a virtual reality kayaking game built around fully physics-based paddling. You sit in a kayak and move it with your own strokes, and the boat responds the way a real kayak would on water. There are beautiful and varied locations to move through, each with different times of day and weather conditions, plus sea and wildlife to keep the environments feeling alive. The whole thing runs in VR and leans hard on realistic full-body movement, so the paddling itself is the gameplay rather than something you trigger with a button.
Two ways to play sit side by side. The checkpoint course is the racing mode: time attack on every level, where you chase your own best run and try to be the fastest. Free roam is the opposite mood — a leisurely trip where nobody is timing you. There is also a controller-free tour mode, where the kayak moves along on its own and you just sit back and take in the scenery.
Playing it with friends
Realtime multiplayer supports two players, so you and one friend can be on the water at the same time. That covers both moods: you can run the checkpoint course against each other and see who actually has the faster line, or you can take free roam at a relaxed pace and just share the trip.
Outside of realtime play there is asynchronous competition. You race against other players on the global leaderboards, and against your friends' times specifically, so a group can pass a course around and keep trying to one-up each other without everyone needing to be online together at once. If you are running the checkpoint course for speed, the leaderboard is the thing you are actually chasing.
Before you start
It is a VR game, and it is built to push what VR can do visually. It is optimized across a range of PCs — high-end rigs get high fidelity, lower-end rigs keep performance — and it supports FidelityFX and DLSS, with DLSS limited to compatible NVIDIA RTX cards. Worth sorting your settings before a long session.
If you are prone to motion sickness, there are comfort settings to soften things. The game also has a controller-free tour mode and free roam if the racing does not suit you on a given day.
There is a pile of unlockable customization: kayak, paddle and headwear all change as you unlock options. If you want to go further, you can attach your controllers to a stick or mount so you are physically holding something shaped like a paddle. Music shifts to fit whichever environment and mode you are in, so a race sounds different from a quiet free roam.
