A Hotel Full of Souls

Gregory House is a hotel in another dimension where souls who were not satisfied in the real world come to live. Here, everyone acts on their own desires, and "strength of thought" is what matters. Bodies can be destroyed, but as long as your heart holds out, death can be rejected. You wake up as one of the zombies with no memory of your own name. Gregory, the caretaker, offers you a deal: restore peace to the hotel, and he will help you get your memories back. The hotel is currently under attack by runaway zombies, so your work starts right away.

Fighting and Absorbing Souls

Your main tool is the Soul Taker, a device embedded in your hand. When you defeat an enemy, you can take their soul and eat it to transform into a soul style that carries that enemy's abilities. Since there are as many souls as there are enemies, you can try different styles and find the one that fits how you want to fight. You can also combine these soul styles with "Memory" to strengthen yourself and build your own approach to combat. This is a 2D rogue lite action game, so you will fight, die, revive, and repeat as you push through the story.

Playing With a Friend

Soul of Roses has a two-player co-op mode. You can sit on the same couch and play together locally, or use Steam's Remote Play Together to join up online. Both players take on the hotel's residents side by side, sharing the fights as you work toward restoring peace to Gregory House.

What to Expect Before You Start

This game is tagged as difficult, so expect a challenge that asks you to come back after a loss and try again. The tone mixes dark humor with a colorful, cartoony look, and the inhabitants are cute but slightly funny characters you can talk to as well as fight. It is currently in Early Access, so the game is still being worked on. The tags also list it as a singleplayer game alongside the co-op option, so you can play through it on your own if you prefer.
