Fighting the Empire with Max Brawley

Gatling Gears is a top-down twin-stick shooter where you pilot a Gatling Gear mech through a campaign that spans six unique environments. Max Brawley, a retired pilot, comes out of retirement when the Empire starts tearing the land apart for natural resources. He brings his niece and his trusty Gear unit along, and the two of them push toward the heart of the Empire to cut the destruction off at its source. Along the way you blast through hordes of enemies, level buildings and trees, and take on six boss battles against machines several times your size. The controls are twin-stick and pick-up-and-play, so you can start shooting right away, while the deeper mechanics give you something to master over time.

Playing Together

The campaign supports two players, either side by side or online, so you and a friend can fight through the whole thing as a pair. When you'd rather compete than cooperate, Survival Mode puts you against wave after wave of enemies and lets you see who lasts the longest. Remote Play Together is available, which means one person can host the session and others can join in from their own setup.

Before You Start

The game leans on twin-stick aiming, so expect to be moving and shooting at the same time for most of the playtime. The difficulty spikes around the boss encounters — six of them are described as genuinely challenging, so a coordinated partner helps a lot there. Destruction is a core part of the loop: buildings, trees, and enemies all come apart as you push forward, and the environments change across the six stages. If your group wants a short session, dropping into Survival Mode is a straightforward way to get in and out without committing to campaign progress.
