Two sisters, two ways to fight
Gal Guardians: Demon Purge is a 2D action platformer set in a school that has been transformed into a demonic castle. You control the Kamizono sisters, Shinobu and Maya, who cut and shoot their way through it to break the curse. Shinobu is built for long-range fighting while Maya is a close-range brawler, and you swap between them on the fly as you move through the castle. Each sibling carries her own set of sub-weapons, so you can change your approach mid-level when a situation calls for it. Sub-weapons draw on Weapon Points, so you need to keep an eye on how much you have in stock before relying on them.
Playing together
The game can be played solo with the tag-team swap, or with a second player joining as the other sister when two controllers are available. Co-op lets one person take Shinobu and the other Maya, and a player can jump in at any point during a run. If a sister goes down in battle, she can be resuscitated with Sister Rescue as long as you make it back to where she fell.
The castle and its bosses
Progress runs through the demonic castle, where bosses wait deep inside. Beat a boss and you earn a new sub-weapon, which does more than add combat options: the new abilities open routes and areas in the castle that were previously out of reach. So the loop is fight, win, get a tool, then go back and explore further.
Options before you start
Difficulty is handled through the Style system, with Casual, Veteran and Legend available. You can change it at any time after starting without any drawback, so it is easy to match the challenge to whoever is on the couch. The story can be played two ways: Pure mode uses the original Japanese voice track for the story, while Refined mode uses English voice acting aimed at the action. The plot follows two threads, the mystery of why the school transformed and what happened to the other students.
