What Fear Surrounds is

Fear Surrounds is a 3D social deduction game with a horror setting. A group of players is split between good guys and two evil specters hiding among them. The good guys win by completing their quests or by voting the specters out during meetings. The specters win by killing every good guy without being exposed. Meetings are the center of the game: you describe where you were, who you suspect and why, and try to read whether other players are telling the truth. Going by guesswork alone costs the good team, since a wrong vote removes an innocent player.

There are dozens of professions to play. On the good side, Travelers keep doing quests while slowly losing HP, and Clergy are Travelers with extra abilities. Priests can check someone's faction, the Forensic Doctor sees corpses on the map, the Psychic learns the faction of the dead at each meeting, and the White Spirit gets one assassination. On the specter side, players get killing and destruction skills by default, plus options like Nightmare, which blinds everyone, Magic Eye, which reveals all player locations, and Silence Specter, which silences one player per round. Ghost King has an extra kill but dies using it. Betrayer plays a neutral role: nobody knows its identity, and it has to help the specters win.

Playing it with a group

Everyone joins an online match together. Some of you will be assigned to the good faction and others to the specters, so the group ends up playing against itself and has to argue it out. Good players watch each other's movements, report bodies, and use meetings to compare stories. Specters kill when nobody is watching, use destruction skills to create openings, and then lie about their whereabouts in meetings, accuse others, or even pretend to be Clergy to throw the good team off. Specters can also pass voice messages to their teammates to coordinate.

Matches play out across many maps, including a hospital, a school and a prison, each with its own layout and scenario. Some modes, like Battle Royale, are available as well. Use CTRL to view the map and Tab to see nearby quests.

Before you start

Travelers lose HP constantly and must keep doing quests to stay alive, so standing still is not an option for the good team. Look at what players actually do, not just what they say. If you are playing a specter, staying unnoticed matters as much as the kills.

New players can use the training mode to learn the maps before joining a real match. If the game does not respond when you click the PLAY button on the Steam page, open the game installation directory and run the "c++ Repair tool" to repair the DirectX environment.
