What DYNASTY WARRIORS 7: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition is

This is a one vs. one-thousand action game set in China's Three Kingdoms era. You take the role of officers who lived through the period and cut through huge armies on open battlefields, shifting the course of battles as you go. The presentation is cinematic, and the story and the fighting run together, so you move from cutscene to combat without a hard break. Wei, Wu, Shu and Jin each get their own view of events in Story Mode, so the same era plays out differently depending on which kingdom you follow. On top of the main campaign there is Conquest Mode for decisive battles with the officers you like, Legend Mode with revamped scenarios from earlier DYNASTY WARRIORS titles plus new stories for the heroes, and Challenge Mode with 4 unique courses for testing your technique.

Playing it together

The Steam features list Remote Play Together, so one person who owns the game can invite friends along through that. Beyond that, the store text does not describe a shared campaign or online co-op, so check how your group wants to handle passing the controller or joining a session before you commit an evening to it. The game is tagged as singleplayer and as co-op, which is worth knowing when you are deciding whether this is the pick for the whole group or a good option for one or two people while others watch.

What to know before starting

This Definitive Edition bundles the new modes and replay elements of Xtreme Legends together with the downloadable content, including the full collection of scenarios from previous versions of the game, a variety of weapons, outfits and BGM. All of that content is available from the start, so you are not unlocking the bulk of the package over time. The modes are largely separate from each other, so a group can split up: one person works through Story Mode, another runs Conquest or Legend Mode, and someone else takes on the Challenge Mode courses, then you compare notes. Expect long stretches of crowd-clearing combat rather than tight duels, since the whole design is built around fighting many enemies at once.
