Two sides of the same ocean

Depth drops you into a dark underwater world where you pick a side: shark or diver. As one of 7 shark species — Great White, Tiger, Mako, Bull, Hammerhead, Thresher, or the Megalodon — you rely on speed and senses to stalk prey across the ocean and finish them with your teeth. As a diver, you swim the abyss hunting for treasure to upgrade your arsenal, carrying gear that ranges from spearguns and pistols to underwater assault rifles and explosive sea mines. The two roles play nothing alike, so a round where you hunt and a round where you get hunted feel like different games.

Playing together as a group

Depth is built around online PvP, so your group gets matched against other players and the tension comes from real opponents rather than scripted encounters. Teamwork matters on both sides: divers cover each other while searching for treasure, sharks coordinate their approach to pick off stragglers. The store text also mentions teaming up against AI, and there is a practice mode where you fight AI bots on several difficulty settings — handy for a group that wants to learn the ropes together before facing human players.

Before you dive in

Expect a tense, hostile atmosphere rather than a relaxed swim. Dynamic lighting and shadows are central to how the game plays, and much of the dread comes from simply not seeing what is moving around you in the dark. Progression runs through unlocks: new weapons for your diver and "evolutions" for your shark that open up fresh tactical options as you play. Persistent stat tracking and Steam achievements give you something to work toward between matches. If your group is new, start with the AI bots to get a feel for movement and combat, then move into online play once everyone is comfortable.
